How to overlay a countdown on a video in CapCut (screen blend)
Want just the countdown numbers on top of your own footage? The easiest way is to make a countdown on a black background and blend it in CapCut. The black drops out and only the numbers stay, cleanly layered over your video.
1. Export a black-background countdown
Open Countdown Studio and set it up:
- Under "Overlay", choose "Black" (you get a pure-black video with just the numbers).
- Set the seconds, font and ending effect however you like.
- Match the aspect ratio to your main video (9:16 for vertical).
- Press "Export video" to download the MP4.
2. Blend it with Screen in CapCut
- Add your main video to CapCut first.
- Add the countdown video as an "Overlay" on the track above it.
- With the countdown clip selected, open "Blend (mix mode)".
- Set the mode to "Screen".
The black background turns transparent and only the numbers appear over your video. You can freely move and resize them.
Tip: if the numbers are hard to see over a bright clip, set the countdown theme to "Neon" so they glow and stand out.
3. If Screen blend isn't available: green screen
Some editors don't support Screen blend. In that case, choose "Overlay → Green" in Countdown Studio, export, and use "Chroma key" in CapCut to remove the green — you get the same numbers-only overlay.
