How to add a countdown to TikTok & short videos

A short "3, 2, 1" countdown at the start of a TikTok, Reel or YouTube Short builds anticipation and keeps viewers watching. This guide shows how to make a countdown video for free — no sign-up, no watermark — and add it to your short videos.

1. Make the countdown video

Open Countdown Studio and set it up like this:

  1. Set the mode to "Countdown".
  2. Enter the seconds (3–5 seconds works well for short videos).
  3. Set the aspect ratio to "Vertical 9:16" (TikTok, Reels and Shorts are all vertical).
  4. Pick a theme, background, font, ending effect and sound to match your video.
  5. Press "Export video" to download an MP4.
Tip: type "GO!" or "START!" in the end-message field so a cue appears after zero. Setting the ending effect to "Explosion" or "Fireworks" makes the transition pop.

2. Put it at the start of your short

Import the MP4 into CapCut or your phone's editor and place it at the very beginning. A 3–5 second countdown before your main clip gives a clean, professional opener.

3. Want only the numbers over your footage?

To keep your video and overlay just the numbers, use the overlay feature. In Countdown Studio choose "Overlay → Black", export, then set the blend mode to "Screen" in your editor so the black disappears. Full steps are in how to overlay a countdown in CapCut.
